AC Maintenance Checklist for Bangalore Homes: Summer and Monsoon
Bangalore’s climate is unusual for AC maintenance — hot, dusty summers followed by heavy monsoon rain put different kinds of stress on a unit within the same year. A little upkeep in between goes a long way toward avoiding a breakdown on the hottest day of the year.
Monthly, during heavy use
- Clean the air filter. This is the single highest-impact thing you can do yourself — a dirty filter is the most common cause of “weak cooling” complaints.
- Check the outdoor unit’s clearance. Dust, leaves, and even nearby plants can restrict airflow around the condenser and reduce cooling efficiency.
- Listen for new noises. Rattling, buzzing, or grinding sounds that weren’t there before are usually easier (and cheaper) to fix early.
Before summer (February–March)
- Book a general service — cleaning the coils, checking refrigerant pressure, and clearing the drain line — before the peak heat months when technicians get booked out fastest.
- Check the drain pipe isn’t clogged; a blocked drain is one of the top causes of water leaking from the indoor unit once the AC starts running for longer hours.
- If the unit is more than 8–10 years old, ask a technician whether it’s still running efficiently compared to a newer inverter model — older units can cost significantly more to run.
Before monsoon (May–June)
- Protect the outdoor unit from direct, heavy rain where possible, without blocking ventilation — a simple angled cover over the top is usually enough.
- Recheck the drain pipe. Combined with humidity, a partially blocked drain during monsoon is a common cause of water stains and leaks indoors.
- Avoid running the AC directly after a power cut or voltage fluctuation, common during Bangalore storms — wait a few minutes for the compressor’s internal pressure to stabilize.
Signs it’s time to call a technician, not wait for the next checklist
- Cooling has noticeably weakened over the past few weeks
- Water is leaking from the indoor unit
- The outdoor unit is unusually loud or vibrating
- Electricity bills have crept up without a change in usage
Routine upkeep catches most problems before they become expensive ones — but when something’s already wrong, a proper diagnosis beats guesswork. If cooling has already dropped off, start with AC not cooling: 7 common causes or how often an AC actually needs a gas refill.
