Freezer Is Fine But the Fridge Isn't Cooling? Here's Why
This is one of the most common refrigerator complaints we get: the freezer is making ice just fine, but the fridge section below (or beside) it is warm, and food is spoiling faster than it should. The good news is that this pattern actually narrows down the cause quite a bit.
Why this happens
In most double-door and side-by-side fridges, there’s only one cooling source — usually in the freezer — and a fan circulates cold air from the freezer into the fridge compartment through a vent. If the freezer is cold but the fridge isn’t, the problem is almost always somewhere in that air path, not the compressor itself.
1. Blocked air vents
Overpacking the fridge, especially against the back wall where the vent usually sits, blocks cold air from reaching the compartment. This is the single most common cause and the easiest to rule out yourself.
2. Faulty evaporator fan
The small fan that pushes cold air from the freezer to the fridge can fail or get obstructed by ice. If you can hear the fridge running but not the faint hum of a fan, this is a likely culprit.
3. Frost buildup on the evaporator coil (defrost system fault)
Frost-free refrigerators periodically melt frost off the coil using a defrost heater and timer. If that system fails, ice builds up on the coil and blocks airflow entirely — cooling drops off gradually over a few days rather than all at once.
4. Damper or thermostat fault
Some fridges use a motorized damper to control how much cold air flows into the fridge section. If it’s stuck closed, the freezer stays cold while the fridge warms up.
5. Door seal not sealing properly
A loose or torn door gasket lets warm air in continuously, which the airflow from the freezer can’t keep up with — especially in Bangalore’s warmer months.
What you can check yourself
- Rearrange items away from the back wall and vents
- Check the door seal by closing it on a piece of paper — if it slides out easily, the seal needs replacing
- Look for visible ice buildup on the back wall of the freezer (a sign of a defrost fault)
- Confirm the thermostat/temperature dial isn’t set too low or accidentally bumped
When to call a technician
