Washing Machine Not Draining? Try This Before You Book a Repair

A washing machine that finishes its cycle with water still sitting in the drum is one of the most common service calls we get — and one of the few appliance problems where a quick check can sometimes save you a repair visit altogether.

Common causes, from most to least likely

1. Clogged drain pump filter

Most front-load machines have a small access panel near the bottom with a drain pump filter that traps coins, buttons, lint, and hair. Over time it clogs completely and blocks drainage. This is by far the most common cause and the one worth checking first.

2. Kinked or blocked drain hose

If the machine was recently moved, the drain hose behind it may be bent sharply or pinned against the wall. A trapped hose can stop water flow completely even though everything inside is working fine.

3. Drain hose positioned incorrectly

The drain hose usually needs to loop up before going down into the drain point. If it was installed too low, or without the right loop, water can siphon oddly or fail to drain properly — more common right after installation or a move.

4. Faulty drain pump

If the filter and hose are both clear, the drain pump motor itself may have failed or be jammed by a foreign object. You’ll often hear a humming sound with no actual draining, or no sound at all.

5. Blocked household drain point

Occasionally the problem isn’t the machine at all — the drain point it empties into is blocked. Worth a quick check if a sink nearby is also draining slowly.

What you can safely check yourself

• Look for an error code on the display (E-codes usually point directly to a drain fault)
• Check the drain hose for visible kinks or pinches behind the machine
• If your model has an accessible filter panel, place a shallow tray underneath and open it carefully — expect some water to come out
• Make sure the machine isn’t on a wash setting that intentionally holds water (like some “hand wash” or “delicate” cycles)

When to call a technician

If the filter is clear and the hose isn’t kinked but water still won’t drain, the drain pump motor or the control board is the likely cause — both need a technician to test and replace safely, especially on machines still under a repair or manufacturer warranty.
